P&L vs Balance Sheet: What Every Founder Needs to Know About Their Business

By Montty Finance Team·Feb 13, 2026·5 min read

As a founder, understanding your company's financial health is key to making informed decisions. While it is easy to fixate entirely on your daily sales or monthly revenue, long-term survival requires tracking the underlying architecture of your business.

Two fundamental financial statements, the Profit and Loss (P&L) statement and the Balance Sheet, offer different but complementary insights into your operational performance and financial position.

What Does Your P&L Tell You?

The P&L statement, also called the income statement, shows whether your business made money or lost money over a specific period, such as a month, a quarter, or a year. It summarizes:

  • Revenue: Total money earned from sales of products or services.
  • Costs: Expenses incurred to generate that revenue, including COGS, marketing, software subscriptions, salaries, and overhead.
  • Net Profit or Loss: The bottom-line result after subtracting all expenses from total revenue.

The Core Question It Answers: Did our business operate profitably during this specific timeframe?

What Does Your Balance Sheet Tell You?

The Balance Sheet offers a snapshot of what your business owns, owes, and its net worth at a precise point in time. It is built on the fundamental accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity.

  • Assets: Resources owned by the company, such as cash in the bank, inventory, equipment, and accounts receivable.
  • Liabilities: Obligations owed to others, such as business loans, credit card balances, accounts payable, and deferred revenue.
  • Equity: The residual net value of the business, the difference between total assets and total liabilities.

The Core Question It Answers: What is the financial health and structural net worth of the business right now?

Why Both Statements Matter to Founders

Looking at only one of these statements leaves you dangerously blind. The P&L helps you track operational performance and profitability trends over time, but doesn't show if cash has actually hit your bank account. The Balance Sheet helps you understand liquidity, debt exposure, and working capital solvency.

Together, they provide a holistic view that informs budgeting, inventory purchasing, debt management, and investment decisions.
